Treatment of contaminated soils

There are various techniques for decontaminating soils either "on site" or "off site". The "on site" techniques offer greater benefits when the soil cannot be excavated because of housing or operational facilities in the area, as well as involving lower costs than “off site” processes.

Dechlorination by dispersion is a physical-chemical “on site” technique that is based on injecting or mixing calcium oxide (CaO) into the soil. The dechlorination reaction will be enhanced by the generation of heat that takes place by adding CaO. This technique, which was initially developed to stabilise oil spills, can also be used to dechlorinate soils contaminated with PCBs.
