Just as we were saying in Part I of this article, speaking about Calcium Carbonate is to speak of a versatile product that is of great importance to Calcinor.
Calcinor obtains this product of high-quality and applicability from our surroundings by extracting the purest limestone rock.
And although its value and importance are well-known in the construction sector, technology has made it possible to develop differentiated Calcium Carbonate such as ARIBLANC PLUS ® (Micronized Calcium Carbonate) and CALPREC PA® and CALPREC PR® (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate or PCC).
And it is precisely these products, and their differentiated properties, that have made it possible for them to be used in many other different sectors which are now benefitting from the application of Calcium Carbonate.
The most surprising applications of Calcium Carbonate
Of the applications that benefit from the finest grains of Calcium Carbonate and which employ the Micronized format are:
Bituminous mixes: The materials that make up bituminous mixes or asphalts are basically aggregates (fine, coarse and filler) and a bituminous binder. The role of Micronized Calcium Carbonate, which acts as filler, forming part of the aforementioned fraction of fine aggregates, is crucial. It has been demonstrated that according to the size of the particle and its specific surface, the quantity of bituminous binder to be added varies. This not only affects the cohesion of the mix but also its wáter repelling properties.
Animal feed: Micronized Calcium Carbonate is used as a food additive in animal feed. In the case of poultry, it improves the quality of eggs and makes the shell harder. With cattle a supply of calcium in its feed improves the quality of the milk and boosts ruminant digestion.
Leather tanning: Tanning is the transformation of any animal skin into leather in such a way that it gives it certain physical, chemical and biological properties. To carry out this process it is necessary to use acidic media that must be neutralized afterwards, so both Calcium Carbonate and Dolomite are employed.
But there are applications that are even more technological, where the Calcium Carbonate necessary must have very specific characteristics. In this case the product employed is PCC, in many different types of applications, some of which are explained below:
Human foodstuffs: Our product, in addition to being used as an additional natural source of Calcium (food supplement), is an effective acid neutralizer used in the production of wine in cold zones or with acid harvests. Its properties mean that it does not give any unpleasant taste to the enriched calcium formulas when it is added (drinks with added calcium).
Automotion: Coated varieties of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate are used as rheology modifiers in a wide range of sealants, and especially in formulations of PVC plastisols which are applied in the automotive industry. Its use significantly simplifies the design of new formulations thanks to its easy dispersion, high yield value, and low viscosity.
Printer inks: The fine grain size of PCC helps to improve the optical and rheological properties of different printer inks. Moreover, it can also improve their surface finish.
