Turkana – The Nariokotomé small-scale factory is ready for enlargement

Since 2015 Calcinor has been collaborating on a humanitarian project in Kenya, to be specific, in the county of Turkana which covers an area of 5,000 sq km2 and has a population of 45,000. This project is led by the MCSPA (Saint Paul and Mother Mary Missionary Community – Comunidad Misionera de San Pablo Apóstol y María Madre de la Iglesia) which works hand in hand with NGO Emalaikat. The aim is to help the local people themselves develop the region.

As we have mentioned in previous news articles on the Calcinor website, the objective is to sustainably produce hand-crafted materials based on the use of lime and gypsum made by the local population. After successfully completing its initial stages the factory has extended its sphere of influence and production cannot keep up with the demand for its products and the needs of the local population. This increase in demand is linked to the results of development in the zone and the new opportunities that the project is bringing to the region, meaning that the project can be continued and the production capacity increased at the Nariokotome factory.

Since the first successful production of lime back in 2015, the project has proved that its activity is sustainable as it only uses local resources and labour and compared to other construction materials it generates lower CO2 emissions.  At the same time it combines the productive cycles of lime and gypsum, creating a symbiosis between these two raw materials which has brought about the rediscovery of mortars such as Trabadillo and the production of other materials that are used, above all, in the construction sector.

The level of investment needed to raise the production capacity, improve the manufacturing processes as well as the facilities has now been estimated. These future developments mean it will be possible to continue developing the area and bring about a positive impact on the neediest inhabitants. If you would like to participate or make a contribution click on this link to see all the details and information related to the project.

Calcinor will continue to collaborate with this small-scale factory that is artisan products. Seeing the progress and participating in its growth is turning out to be a very rewarding and enriching experience.
